Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the total population at end-December 2020 was 683,100, representing an increase of 300 compared to end-September 2020 and a year-on-year growth of 3,500; female population accounted for 53.2% of the total. The proportion of elderly population (aged 65 and over) grew by 1.0 percentage point year-on-year to 12.9%, whereas that of adult population (aged 15-64) dropped by 1.1 percentage points to 73.8%. The population of Macao continued to age, with the ageing ratio rising to 97.1%.

Local population, excluding non-resident workers and non-local students living in Macao, increased by 1.6% year-on-year to 564,100, and 53.3% of them were females. The elderly (aged 65 and over) took up 15.7% of the total while the youth (aged 0-14) constituted 16.1%. The elderly dependency ratio for the local population was 22.9%, indicating that about 5 adults supported 1 elderly person.

In the fourth quarter of 2020, number of live births decreased by 63 quarter-to-quarter to 1,345, and mortality went down by 11 to 566. For the whole year of 2020, a total of 5,545 live births were delivered, down by 434 year-on-year; the birth rate fell by 0.8 per mille point to 8.1‰. The sex ratio of newborns was 107.0, corresponding to 107.0 male babies per 100 female babies. Meanwhile, mortality decreased by 52 year-on-year to 2,230 in 2020, with 56.8% being males; the mortality rate was 3.3‰, down by 0.1 per mille point. Mortality from Malignant neoplasms (859) accounted for the largest proportion of the total deaths, at 38.5%; mortality from Hypertension (261) and Heart diseases (213) made up 11.7% and 9.6% of the total respectively.

There were 177,663 non-resident workers at end-2020, a decrease of 18,875 year-on-year; those engaged in Hotels, restaurants & similar activities dropped by 10,193 to 44,555, and those working in the Construction sector went down by 2,403 to 26,984. In 2020, number of new arrivals from mainland China with one-way permit reduced by 784 year-on-year to 2,973, with those coming from Guangdong Province falling by 491 to 2,110; females comprised 66.0% of the total. Meanwhile, number of individuals granted right of abode decreased by 237 year-on-year to 730 in 2020.

A total of 2,754 cases of marriage registration were recorded in 2020, down by 26.0% year-on-year. Median age at first marriage was 30.0 for the bridegrooms and 28.2 for the brides, up by 0.5 year and 0.2 year respectively. Number of divorce cases decreased by 116 year-on-year to 1,319.

At end-2020, number of households totalled 199,700, up by 2,200 year-on-year.
