In order to promote the joint development of Portuguese language teaching in Macao, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and Mainland China, and to provide more solid support for Chinese and Portuguese bilingual talents for the construction of the "Belt and Road", the Centre for Portuguese Studies of Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) has launched the first Blue Book - Report on the Development of Portuguese Teaching in Higher Institutions in China (1960-2020).  It aims to comprehensively classify and summarise the history, present and future of Portuguese language teaching in higher institutions in China and the contributions made by the Macao region during this time.

The year of 2020 marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Portuguese studies in higher institutions in China.  In the past 60 years, Portuguese language teaching in China has developed rapidly in all aspects, and a series of impressive results have been achieved.  Various institutions continue to increase their investment in Portuguese language teaching, offering courses with diversified characteristics, expanding the scale of running schools, and optimizing the faculty.  The research results of Portuguese as a second language teaching are becoming more and more abundant.  The academic exchanges between local institutions and institutions of Portuguese speaking countries continue to deepen and cooperation becomes increasingly mature.

The Blue Book - Report on the Development of Portuguese Teaching in Higher Institutions in China (1960-2020) consists of four chapters: the first chapter reviews and summarizes the 60-year history of the development of Portuguese language teaching in China through interviews. The second chapter systematically summarises the current situation of Portuguese language teaching in higher institutions in China, focusing on the basic situation of institutions with Portuguese studies and their curriculum development, the training of Portuguese studies, the structural levels of Portuguese language teachers and the level of the Portuguese language proficiency test. The third chapter summarises the results and sources of the Portuguese teaching field in China, including monographs, journals, academic conference papers, master’s and doctoral dissertations, and many other research studies. The fourth chapter shows how the Centre of Portuguese Studies of Macao Polytechnic Institute promotes and develops Portuguese language teaching and research in Macao and China. The specific work includes the development of teacher training, publication of teaching materials and scientific research works, development and utilization of scientific and technological resources, and organization of Portuguese-speaking academic and cultural activities and competitions, etc.

Blue Book - Report on the Development of Portuguese Teaching in Higher Institutions in China (1960-2020) is the first blue book on Portuguese teaching in China, which is rich in content and complete in system. The publication of the book is of great significance to further promote the development of Portuguese language teaching in higher institutions in Macao and in higher education institutions in China. It also highlights Macao's special status and unique advantages as a “Service Platform for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries” and a “Training Base of Chinese-Portuguese Bilingual Talents”.
