In order to enhance the elderly’s knowledge of chronic disease prevention, the Seniors Academy (ACS) of MPI held a health seminar on “Correctly understanding hypertension, heart disease and the application of ultrasound in musculoskeletal medicine and pain”. Dr. Chau Chi Hong was invited to be the speaker of this seminar. Many elderly students of MPI participated actively at the seminar. 

Speaker Dr. Chau Chi Hong graduated from School of Medicine of Jinan University, where he majored in clinical medicine. He is a Fellow of MAM (Family Medicine) and Fellow of The Hong Kong Institute of Musculoskeletal Medicine. At the seminar Dr. Chau first introduced the definition, causes and symptoms of hypertension and heart disease to the elderly. He taught them to prevent hypertension and heart disease by starting with lifestyle habits, e.g., eating healthily and exercising more. He then introduced common musculoskeletal problems and pointed out the role of ultrasound in diagnosing musculoskeletal diseases. The elderly responded positively to Dr. Chau’s questions and the interaction at the seminar was good. At the end of the seminar, Dr. Chau also assessed the risk of cardiovascular diseases and performed an ultrasound scan of bones and muscles for several students. 

The participants found the seminar very practical and useful. It allowed them to have a better understanding of the health threats of hypertension and heart disease. They benefitted a lot by learning the application of ultrasound in musculoskeletal medicine and pain, as well as understanding the importance of health. They hoped that ACS would continue to hold different types of health seminars to strengthen the elderly’s awareness of their own health management.
