Information from the Statistics and Census Service indicated that there were 15,741 wholesale & retail establishments, market stalls and fixed street stalls operating in 2019, an increase of 190 year-on-year; total number of persons engaged rose by 2008 to 72,059, with employees accounting for 82.0% of the total. Receipts and expenditure of Wholesale & Retail Trade stood at MOP 130.38 billion and MOP 119.39 billion respectively, up by 0.7% and 1.7% year-on-year. Gross Surplus totalled MOP 12.27 billion, representing a year-on-year decrease of 13.0%. Gross Value Added that measures the sectoral contribution to the economy fell by 4.3% year-on-year to MOP 24.02 billion, and Gross Fixed Capital Formation declined by 48.6% to MOP 1.07 billion.

Wholesale establishments totalled 5,915, up by 343 year-on-year. Receipts of these establishments edged down by 0.3% year-on-year to MOP 42.76 billion, with receipts from Wholesale of Consumer Goods such as electrical appliances, medicines and hygiene products (MOP 8.81 billion) dropping by 17.7%; meanwhile, receipts from Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco (MOP 13.87 billion), Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (MOP 7.86 billion) and Wholesale of Fuels (MOP 5.37 billion) showed respective growth of 6.9%, 21.3% and 16.4%. Expenditure of wholesale establishments grew by 1.1% year-on-year to MOP 39.01 billion; Compensation of Employees (MOP 3.31 billion) and Purchase of Goods & Commission Paid (MOP 32.13 billion) went up by 10.7% and 0.5% respectively, while Operating Expenses (MOP 3.57 billion) decreased by 0.9%. Gross Surplus amounted to MOP 4.05 billion, down by 3.4% year-on-year. Gross Value Added increased by 2.4% year-on-year to MOP 7.35 billion, whereas Gross Fixed Capital Formation slid by 45.8% to MOP 216 million.

Retail establishments decreased by 65 year-on-year to 7,319. Receipts of these establishments inched up by 0.6% to MOP 79.32 billion. Receipts from Retail Sales of Goods in Supermarkets and Department Stores expanded by 7.3% and 4.1% respectively, and those from Sales of Leather Goods grew by 2.0%. By contrast, receipts from Sales of Adults’ Clothing and Watches, Clocks & Jewellery saw respective decreases of 10.1% and 2.1%. Expenditure of retail establishments amounted to MOP 72.67 billion, up by 1.2% year-on-year; Purchase of Goods & Commission Paid (MOP 50.28 billion), Operating Expenses (MOP 14.64 billion) and Compensation of Employees (MOP 7.74 billion) recorded increases of 0.5%, 1.5% and 5.2% respectively. Meanwhile, Gross Surplus fell by 18.3% year-on-year to MOP 7.49 billion and Gross Value Added went down by 7.8% to MOP 15.24 billion. Gross Fixed Capital Formation totalled MOP 829 million, a decline of 48.8% year-on-year.

There were 1,052 establishments operating in Sales of Motor Vehicles & Automotive Fuel, an increase of 26 year-on-year. Receipts of these establishments expanded by 11.3% year-on-year to MOP 6.69 billion. Expenditure rose by 12.0% year-on-year to MOP 6.33 billion, of which Purchase of Goods & Commission Paid (MOP 5.12 billion), Operating Expenses (MOP 567 million) and Compensation of Employees (MOP 647 million) grew by 13.0%, 8.6% and 7.9% respectively. Gross Surplus and Gross Value Added stood at MOP 512 million and MOP 1.16 billion respectively, up by 12.3% and 9.8% year-on-year. Meanwhile, Gross Fixed Capital Formation went down by 62.4% year-on-year to MOP 24 million.

Number of market stalls & fixed stalls on the street was 1,455. Receipts and expenditure of these stalls amounted to MOP 1.60 billion and MOP 1.38 billion respectively, representing decreases of 4.8% and 1.2% year-on-year. Gross Surplus dropped by 22.2% year-on-year to MOP 222 million and Gross Value Added declined by 19.3% to MOP 272 million.
