Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that a total of 117 hotels & guesthouses were open for business in August 2020, a decrease of 2 year-on-year; number of available guest rooms dropped by 9.7% to 35,000. Data on hotels & guesthouses used for medical observation were excluded in the compilation of the following statistics. The average occupancy rate of guest rooms stood at 13.3%, a decline of 79.7 percentage points year-on-year. The rate of guesthouses (13.1%) fell by 10.7 percentage points month-to-month, on account of a decrease in lodging demand by non-resident workers following the adjustments to the quarantine measures.

The number of guests checked into hotels & guesthouses  declined by 85.5% year-on-year to 184,000 in August. Local residents became the major source of guests (67.4% of total), a surge of 137.0% year-on-year to 124,000, which also represented a month-to-month increase of 52.4% as hotels continued to offer promotional packages to residents. On the other hand, guests from mainland China (44,000) and Hong Kong (11,000) registered respective decreases of more than 90% year-on-year. The average length of stay of guests went down by 0.1 night year-on-year to 1.4 nights.

In the first eight months of 2020, the average occupancy rate of guest rooms slid by 68.1 percentage points year-on-year to 23.5%. The number of guests of hotels & guesthouses tumbled by 77.0% to 2,167,000, whereas their average length of stay went up by 0.2 night to 1.7 nights.

As the issuance of travel permits for Guangdong residents to visit Macao was resumed in late August, no inbound package tour visitors were recorded in the month and number of visitors joining local tours was less than 50. In addition, outbound residents using services of travel agencies totalled 600. In the first eight months of 2020, there were 253,000 package tour visitors, a decline of 96.0% year-on-year; outbound residents using services of travel agencies fell by 92.6% to 89,000.
