Package tours and hotel occupancy rate for April 2020

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that a total of 110 hotels & guesthouses were open for business in April 2020, and number of available guest rooms decreased by 12.3% year-on-year to 34,000. Data on hotels & guesthouses used for medical observation were excluded in the compilation of the following statistics. With a continued decline in number of overnight visitors in April following the tightened quarantine measures for arrivals in late March, the average occupancy rate of guest rooms fell by 78.6 percentage points year-on-year to 12.9%. The rate of 5-star hotels (6.6%) reduced by 85.9 percentage points, while the rates of 2-star hotels (37.4%) and guesthouses (36.3%) dropped by 40.1 percentage points and 28.5 percentage points respectively.

A total of 107,000 guests checked into hotels & guesthouses in April, a decline of 90.6% year-on-year. Number of guests coming from different countries/places recorded decreases, with those from mainland China (70,000) and Hong Kong (10,000) falling by 91.1% and 92.8% respectively. Meanwhile, the average length of stay of guests extended by 0.9 night year-on-year to 2.3 nights.

In the first four months of 2020, the average occupancy rate of guest rooms was 34.8%, a drop of 57.0 percentage points year-on-year. Guests of hotels & guesthouses fell by 65.9% to 1,581,000, while their average length of stay went up by 0.2 night to 1.7 nights.

On account of the quarantine restrictions for arrivals, there were no package tour visitors coming to Macao in April; number of outbound residents using services of travel agencies declined by 99.9% year-on-year to 200. In the first four months of 2020, a total of 253,000 package tour visitors were recorded, a fall of 92.3% year-on-year; outbound residents using services of travel agencies decreased by 85.4% to 88,000.
