An aggregate of 351 people has signed up for the right to contest available places on the Chief Executive Election Committee. The figure was confirmed after applications for candidature regarding the June polling closed at 6pm today.

A total of 120 candidature applications was received from Macao’s First Sector, which covers the industrial, commercial and financial sub-sectors. The number of applications received is equal to the number of places on the Chief Executive Election Committee allocated to this sector.

Among the candidature applications from the Second Sector, 26 came from the cultural sub-sector; 31 from the educational sub-sector; 43 from the professional sub-sector; and 17 from the sports sub-sector.

In the Third Sector, the labour and social service sub-sectors generated 63 and 51 candidature applications respectively.

Candidature applications received from the educational sub-sector, the labour sub-sector and the social service sub-sector exceeded the number of places on the Chief Executive Election Committee available for each of the respective sub-sectors. The educational sub-sector generated 31 candidature applications for a total of 29 available places; 63 candidature applications were received for the 59 seats available for the labour sub-sector; and an aggregate of 51 people signed up for the right to contest the 50 available places for the social service sub-sector.

Fourth-Sector membership is formed by: representatives of the Legislative Assembly; representatives of the Municipal Affairs Bureau; and Macao’s delegates respectively to the National People’s Congress and to the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.

Once the applications have been assessed regarding eligibility, the Public Administration and Civil Service Bureau will publish on Tuesday next week (14 May) a list of eligible candidates for the polling to choose the Chief Executive Election Committee.

Anyone wishing to appeal against the contents of the list of eligible candidates can do so to the Court of Final Appeal on 15 May. Should there be neither an appeal lodged, nor a court decision to be made as of that day, the Public Administration and Civil Service Bureau would publish on 16 May the general list of accepted candidates.

The Chief Executive Election Committee has a total of 400 members. According to the Chief Executive Election Law, 344 members out of the aggregate are elected from the four sectors mentioned above.

The date of the poll to choose available places on the Chief Executive Election Committee is 16 June. The Chief Executive Election Committee will subsequently choose a new Chief Executive.
