Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the annual mean air temperature in Macao in 2020 dropped by 0.3ºC year-on-year to 23.3ºC. The highest temperature of the year was 35.5ºC in July, down slightly by 0.2ºC from 2019; the lowest temperature was 6.7ºC in December, a fall of 1.7ºC. Meanwhile, total precipitation decreased by 534.8mm year-on-year to 1,713.2mm.
There were 5 tropical cyclones in 2020. Tropical cyclone signal no.10 was hoisted when typhoon Higos hit Macao; a maximum gust of 215.6km per hour and a maximum 10-minute average wind speed of 138.6km per hour were recorded.
The air quality of Macao improved in 2020, with each monitoring station recording higher number of "Good" air quality days as compared to 2019; moreover, number of "Poor" air quality days registered at each station showed a notable drop. All monitoring stations registered no exceedance days for respirable suspended particulates (PM10) and fine suspended particulates (PM2.5) throughout the year.
Total water consumption was 85,515,000m3, down by 7.9% year-on-year. Water consumption by the households (42,816,000m3) increased by 9.4% year-on-year, while that by the business sector (37,115,000m3) and the government sector (5,584,000m3) decreased by 22.3% and 5.7% respectively. The Waste Water Treatment Plants treated an average of 208,508m3 of waste water per day.
The Refuse Incineration Plant treated a total of 437,592 tonnes of municipal solid waste in 2020, a decrease of 19.8% year-on-year. Besides, volume of construction waste sent to landfill totalled 3,974,000m3, up by 66.0%.
The land area of Macao measured 32.9km2. The population density went up from 20,400 persons per km2 in 2019 to 20,800 persons per km2 in 2020.
