Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that a total of 2,454 organisations were operating in the four core domains of cultural industries in Macao in 2019, namely 'Creative design', 'Cultural exhibitions & performances', 'Art collection' and 'Digital media'; this represented an increase of 209 year-on-year. Total number of persons engaged rose by 6.8% to 13,659, and Compensation of Employees went up by 10.2% to MOP 2.18 billion. Total Service Receipts of the cultural industries grew by 8.7% year-on-year to MOP 7.85 billion. Gross Value Added that measures the sectoral contribution to the economy expanded by 13.9% to MOP 2.98 billion, accounting for 0.7% of the total Gross Value Added of all economic activities of Macao in 2019. Moreover, Gross Fixed Capital Formation of the cultural industries surged by 115.1% year-on-year to MOP 0.61 billion, attributable to the acquisition of new equipment and improvements made to venues by some organisations.

There were 1,397 organisations operating in 'Creative design', an increase of 133 year-on-year. Number of persons engaged rose by 16.5% to 4,593, and Compensation of Employees grew by 14.0% to MOP 0.61 billion. Service Receipts and Gross Value Added totalled MOP 2.47 billion and MOP 0.88 billion respectively in 2019, up by 15.5% and 17.6% year-on-year. Within this domain, the advertising industry generated the highest Service Receipts, at MOP 0.90 billion (+6.5%). In addition, Service Receipts of organisations engaged in conference & exhibition organising services (MOP 0.58 billion) and architectural design (MOP 0.56 billion) showed respective growth of 22.8% and 24.3%.

A total of 281 organisations were operating in 'Cultural exhibitions & performances', up by 26 year-on-year; number of persons engaged rose by 13.0% to 3,043. Compensation of Employees amounted to MOP 0.41 billion, a rise of 16.8%. Service Receipts of this domain increased by 1.7% year-on-year to MOP 1.44 billion, with ticket sales accounting for 46.0% of the total. Gross Value Added (MOP 0.25 billion) decreased by 37.9%. Number of organisations operating in production of performing arts went up by 21 year-on-year to 193, and number of persons engaged grew by 15.4% to 2,291. Service Receipts of this industry comprised 84.6% of the domain's total, at MOP 1.22 billion (+2.2%). In view of an increase in operating expenses of some large organisations on publicity as well as on the production of performances and exhibitions, Gross Value Added dropped by 41.0% year-on-year to MOP 0.16 billion.

Organisations operating in 'Art collection' increased by 17 year-on-year to 138, with number of persons engaged rising by 5.3% to 532. Compensation of Employees edged up by 0.1% to MOP 37.50 million. Service Receipts (MOP 0.11 billion) and Gross Value Added (MOP 36.80 million) of this domain went up by 9.7% and 51.8% respectively. Moreover, Gross Fixed Capital Formation leapt by 102.8% to MOP 6.60 million. Number of organisations engaged in creation, sale and auction of arts grew by 4 year-on-year to 23, with 94 persons engaged. Service Receipts (MOP 17.20 million) of these organisations dropped by 25.5%, while Gross Value Added (MOP 7.0 million) and Gross Fixed Capital Formation (MOP 2.30 million) jumped by 53.9% and 1,955.4% respectively year-on-year. Meanwhile, organisations engaged in photography services went up by 13 year-on-year to 115, and number of persons engaged grew by 3.5% to 438. Service Receipts (MOP 97.10 million), Gross Value Added (MOP 29.80 million) and Gross Fixed Capital Formation (MOP 4.30 million) of these organisations rose by 19.7%, 51.4% and 37.6% respectively.

There were 638 organisations operating in 'Digital media', up by 33 year-on-year. Number of persons engaged decreased by 2.8% to 5,491, while Compensation of Employees went up by 6.5% to MOP 1.13 billion. Service Receipts (MOP 3.82 billion) and Gross Value Added (MOP 1.81 billion) of this domain grew by 7.3% and 25.8% respectively. In addition, Gross Fixed Capital Formation swelled by 13.1% year-on-year to MOP 0.15 billion. Number of organisations operating in the information industry increased by 30 year-on-year to 386, while number of persons engaged fell by 1.8% to 2,298. Service Receipts (MOP 2.23 billion) and Gross Value Added (MOP 0.96 billion) of these organisations expanded by 7.3% and 45.5% respectively.

Compilation of Cultural Industries Statistics is carried out by the Industries Statistics and Assessment Indicators Group under the Committee of Cultural Industries of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), in accordance with the framework for cultural industries statistics established based on the Policy Framework for the Development of Cultural Industries of the Macao SAR. In 2019, the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) conducted a number of specialised surveys in the four domains of cultural industries, namely 'Creative design', 'Cultural exhibitions & performances', 'Art collection' and 'Digital media'. Survey results were combined with data collected from relevant industries surveys of DSEC to estimate the economic contribution of cultural industries in Macao.
