Since the establishment of the first Portuguese language degree programme in 1960, Portuguese language teaching in higher education in China has undergone 6 decades of development.  In order to review and summarize the development of Portuguese language teaching in higher education in China, promote the construction of the “Chinese-Portuguese bilingual talent training base” in Macao, as well as to leverage the advantages of Macao as the “platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries” to enhance the level of Portuguese language teaching and research in China, the Centre for Portuguese Studies of Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI) will hold the online conference on “60 Years of Portuguese Language Teaching in Higher Education in China” from 23 November to 3 December.  Chinese-Portuguese scholars, Portuguese teachers in higher education, Chinese-Portuguese translators and other interested parties are welcome to sign up and participate.

The 60th anniversary of the establishment of the professional Portuguese language programme in China is a milestone in the history of the academic development.  In the past 60 years, the Portuguese language programme in higher education in China has developed vigorously, achieving a series of remarkable results in terms of the number of professional colleges opened, the level of schooling, the scale of schooling, the construction of the teaching staff, talent training, the publication of textbooks and so on.  At the same time, the 60th anniversary is a milestone as well as a new starting point.  The needs generated by the construction of the “Belt and Road” and “Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area” provide a new opportunity for our academic colleagues to rethink the objectives of training qualified Portuguese language talents and the directions of the Portuguese course development.

Peking University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Shanghai International Studies University, Communication University of China, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, University of Coimbra in Portugal, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, etc., including experts and scholars from national and international well-known higher education, famous literary works translators and renowned textbook editors, will be invited to gather in the cloud to discuss the fruitful results over the 60 years of Portuguese language teaching in higher education in China and to look forward to new opportunities for its future development.

The conference will mainly focus on topics such as the teaching of Portuguese in China, the compilation and use of Portuguese textbooks, the translation of Chinese and Portuguese literature, and the exchange of Chinese and Portuguese students.  There will be four sub-forums: “Higher Education Exchange: China and Portuguese-speaking Countries”, “Voice of the Translator: Chinese-Portuguese Dialogue”, “Author's Perspective: Chinese-Portuguese Teaching Materials” and “Portuguese Teaching in Higher Education in China: Future and Challenges”.  Each sub-forum will feature guest keynote speeches followed by interactive discussion sessions, providing an online communication platform for participants and guests.

The online conference on “60 Years of Portuguese Language Teaching in Higher Education in China” is open for registration now until 17 November.
