Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that there were 3,364 establishments operating in the Transport, Storage & Communications Sector in 2019, representing an increase of 132 year-on-year; total number of persons engaged rose by 694 to 23,782. Receipts of the sector decreased by 3.3% year-on-year to MOP 32.59 billion, and expenditure fell by 4.1% to MOP 26.30 billion. Gross Surplus totalled MOP 6.21 billion, down by 1.0% year-on-year; however, Gross Surplus Ratio (19.0%) and Gross Surplus-Expenditure Ratio (23.6%) edged up by 0.4 percentage points and 0.7 percentage points respectively. Gross Value Added that measures the sectoral contribution to the economy went up by 4.2% year-on-year to MOP 11.85 billion, and Gross Fixed Capital Formation grew by 25.6% to MOP 1.91 billion.

As regards the Transport & Storage Sector, operating establishments increased by 134 year-on-year to 3,324 in 2019, with number of persons engaged rising by 723 to 21,264. Receipts and expenditure of this sector totalled MOP 24.85 billion and MOP 21.01 billion respectively, up by 1.0% and 1.6% year-on-year. As the growth rate of receipts was slightly lower than that of expenditure, Gross Surplus dropped by 1.9% year-on-year  to  MOP 3.83  billion; Gross Surplus Ratio (15.4%) and Gross Surplus-Expenditure Ratio (18.3%) inched down by 0.5 percentage points and 0.6 percentage points respectively. Gross Value Added stood at MOP 8.47 billion, representing a rise of 6.0% year-on-year. Gross Fixed Capital Formation of this sector surged by 48.4% year-on-year to MOP 1.64 billion, attributable to the acquisition of fixed assets such as property, machinery and equipment.

Analysed by industry, receipts and expenditure of Land Transport grew by 33.0% and 42.3% year-on-year to MOP 5.44 billion and MOP 4.02 billion respectively. On the other hand, receipts of Sea Transport fell by 30.8% year-on-year to MOP 1.73 billion on account of a reduced demand for water transport services for passenger and freight; besides, this industry recorded MOP 1.89 billion in expenditure, a drop of 17.5%. In terms of types of receipts and expenditure, receipts generated from Rents of Vehicles (MOP 1.88 billion) and Cargo Transport (MOP 1.81 billion) registered growth of 12.7% and 1.5% year-on-year respectively, whereas those from Passenger Transport Services (MOP 9.44 billion) and Services Rendered (MOP 9.06 billion) fell by 3.1% and 5.3% respectively. Meanwhile, expenditure was mainly incurred on Operating Expenses (MOP 10.29 billion), which grew by 8.6% year-on-year; Compensation of Employees (MOP 4.64 billion) rose by 13.5% while Purchase of Goods & Services and Commission (MOP 6.08 billion) went down by 14.6%.

Regarding the Communications Sector, operating establishments totalled 40 in 2019, a decrease of 2 year-on-year; number of persons engaged went down by 29 to 2,518. Receipts of this sector slid by 15.1% year-on-year to MOP 7.74 billion, on account of a drop in sales of goods. Expenditure of the sector amounted to MOP 5.28 billion, a fall of 21.5% year-on-year. Gross Surplus went up by 0.3% year-on-year to MOP 2.37 billion; Gross Surplus Ratio (30.6%) and Gross Surplus-Expenditure Ratio (44.9%) grew by 4.7 percentage points and 9.8 percentage points respectively. Gross Value Added held steady year-on-year at MOP 3.38 billion. Gross Fixed Capital Formation of the sector declined by 34.9% year-on-year to MOP 271 million, as a result of a decrease in acquisition of machinery and equipment as well as sale of shops by some establishments in 2019.

Receipts and expenditure of the establishments engaged in Telecommunications Services in the Communications Sector fell by 16.5% and 23.8% year-on-year to MOP 7.03 billion and MOP 4.69 billion respectively. Analysed by type of receipts and expenditure, receipts from Postal, Courier & Communications Services (MOP 3.57 billion) and Sales of Goods (MOP 3.11 billion) saw year-on-year decreases of 2.9% and 32.8% respectively. In terms of expenditure, Purchase of Goods & Services and Commission (MOP 3.39 billion) and Compensation of Employees (MOP 1.01 billion) dropped by 30.5% and 0.7% year-on-year respectively, whereas Operating Expenses (MOP 892 million) showed a 5.3% growth.
