The Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia epidemic has continually stabilised. Senior secondary and junior secondary educational stages of non-tertiary education schools resumed classes on 4th May and 11th May respectively. During this period, the DSEJ has maintained close communication with schools and sent staff members to visit schools that have resumed classes to learn about and support their operations. At the same time, the DSEJ also sent staff members to the border gate inspection building to observe the immigration clearance of cross-border students on the early morning of 11th May. As seen from the scene, students went through customs smoothly. On the whole, secondary schools have resumed classes smoothly, epidemic preventive measures have been strictly implemented, teaching staff and students have gradually returned to normal school life.

After consulting with the staff of the health departments and listening to their professional advice, as well as having an in-depth and practical discussion with the representatives from the education sector, the DSEJ has worked out the arrangements for the class resumption for primary schools. Primary schools will resume classes in two phases in an orderly way. As for the class resumption for kindergartens and special education schools, the DSEJ considers handling it with more flexibility, or it is not ruled out the possibility that pupils will not return to school for this academic year; the home study plan will be continued for them.

Handling class resumption with more flexibility, or it is not ruled out the possibility that pupils will not return to school for this academic year

  1. After class resumption, parents can apply for an excused absence to the school for their child in accordance with the development of the epidemic and the needs of the child. Schools should handle it flexibly.
  2. The dates of class resumption may be adjusted in accordance with the development of the epidemic. Adjustments will be made after referring to the advice of the health departments.
  3. Schools have started to implement the friendly measure since 11th May. Caring service is provided to pupils of Primary one to Primary three, kindergartens and special education schools who need the service.

The DSEJ reiterates that before returning to classroom teaching, all students must have stayed in Macao, Zhuhai or Zhongshan for 14 days. Cross-border students need to receive a nucleic acid test every 7 days in order to be able to commute between Macao, Zhuhai or Zhongshan. Schools have to implement preventive measures related to hygiene and cleanliness in accordance with the guidelines issued by the DSEJ and the health departments.

Besides, private supplementary education support centres (tutorial centres) and continuing education institutions can gradually resume operations in phases on condition that they follow the guidelines on epidemic prevention issued by the Health Bureau. From 25th May onwards, they can provide comprehensive services.

The DSEJ will continue to pay attention to the development of the epidemic, maintain close communication with all educational stakeholders, strengthen cooperation with them to properly carry out various work related to class resumption.
